Until I have a journal that works properly on this website, I have temporarily moved the journal over to wordpress.com which can be found here.

Today I began learning Maya. There is a YouTube channel called FlippedNormals that does some great tutorials and podcasts based on 3D modelling and sculptures using ZBrush. During the time spent making progress on the report I was doing for another module, I had created a playlist of their uploads and updated it as they released content that interested in. My intentions now is to spend a couple of weeks going through them all while making notes and doing the tutorial, if the video happens to be a tutorial, so that I may get a stronger understanding of the programs I don’t currently know. Although the programs which they specialize in and are teaching do not have any direct correlation towards the first project I am doing, they are programs I wish to learn nonetheless and thought now is a good a time than any to start learning. The screenshot below is what I was able to create by the end of the video:

During the course of a couple of hours that it took me to create this asset, I was taught the basics such as how to use shortcut commands for certain functions, how to switch cameras, add a reference image, where the X-ray option is and how to delete history so that it doesn’t mess things up, amongst several other handy to know tips. I feel like I have learned a tremendous amount here as I am now comfortable enough to go out into Maya and make my own work without needing any assistance. It won’t be perfect or to a professional standard, but at least I know the basics.

However, there was one huge problem I was continually faced with. The problem that took most of my time trying to fix, but only partially succeeding was that when it came to smoothing it out, the geometry would mess up. I figured out that the reason why it was doing this was because I had somehow duplicated edges as I was modelling and didn’t notice until later on. I don’t know how this happened or the proper way to fix it, but it is something I just need to be on the look out for in the future. The images below show a before and after of what I was talking about:

As you can see, the lines in the foreground are messed up in some places when they should be curved properly like the others. The areas where lines are wobbly have duplicated edges and are quite troublesome to get rid of. Whether I am just doing something wrong or not, I don’t know yet at this stage. Tomorrow I hope to do another tutorial based on hard surfacing modelling again so that I may improve on what I already know.

I’ve been playing around today with a plugin called Forester for Cinema 4D. I’ve been learning more about how to create grass and it seems like this plugin is perfect for it, but the only downside so far it seems is that it takes a massive toll on performance which is probably typical from a single GPU anyway. This meant I had to be much more careful with how much grass I was using or else the entire program would just freeze on me. I then rendered what I had with DoF enabled and edited it in Photoshop to make it slightly more exposed with an additional warm tint placed on top. Still need to learn more about render times though as I stopped this one about 45 minutes in when it probably would’ve taken a good 4+ hours according to the progress bar.

Houdini test

Keep forgetting to upload these journal posts on the same day I upload them to Twitter and Instagram. Anyway, this is my first experience using Houdini with Cinema 4D and Octane and so far I’ve been having fun with it. Render times have been absolutely insane (about 4 hours), so that’s one major issue I need to learn more about and overcome so that making frequent 3D animations can become much easier to produce and upload.

Project page and resources drop-down menu update

Just made a couple of changes to the project page and resources drop-down menu. Making a post here so I can remember what it looked like before.

Pumpkin Puzzle Box (02/31)

A little ambiguous, I know, but oh well. Maybe if you were to solve it you are rewarded with a little golden pumpkin or something?

Demon Ring

I’m going to try do something Halloween related each day during October. Today is a ring with the head of a demon attached!

I’ve also done a timelapse video which you can find below:

Modeling a Chair in Cinema 4D

For the past few days I’ve been learning on and off how to model properly in Cinema 4D. I found the process to be very interesting and managed to learn 30+ or so new tools and techniques that I can use more of in the future. I also made a few mistakes here and there which are too difficult to fix right now (due to making subdivision surfaces editable), but I’ve learned from those mistakes as well and I look forward to doing more hard surface modeling when I can. It’s pretty fun. Also, my Octane skills are still very weak, but I’m hoping to get better at that that over time as well.

You can find the link to the Skillshare class I watched and learned from here.

Octane Render Test

I’m taking a step forward today in my pursuit of becoming a better 3D artist by updating to Cinema 4D R19 (from R17) and downloading the Octane render engine plugin demo for Cinema 4D. I previously watched a video from David Ariew, and I decided that I wanted to have a play around with it myself for a little while. I’ve now gained a bit of an understanding of what the Node Editor is all about, how you go about creating and editing materials specific to Octane, how to render and how to use the Scatter feature along with quite a few other things.

Despite the annoying limitations in render size and quality due to it being a demo and the watermark that gets placed on top, I’m really looking forward to learning more about this 3rd party render engine and will most likely be purchasing a monthly subscription next month.

I’ve also included a screenshot of my layout because I want to remember what it looks until I’ve looked into how to create and export workspaces.

Woodland Dagger

A last minute illustration. Not too satisfied with it since I’m still feeling rusty but I’ll try again tomorrow.
